Abstract. The locally finite minimal abelian varieties are completely classified. In this talk we first show, without assuming local finiteness, that every nontrivial abelian variety that is not affine has a nontrivial strongly abelian subvariety, and then discuss minimal affine varieties and minimal strongly abelian varieties.
