Lusztig Temesváron született, Bukarestben és Princetonban tanult.
Néhány évig az angliai Warwick Egyetemen dolgozott, 1978 óta az MIT professzora.
Nagyon sok rangos kitüntetés birtokosa, köztük az Amerikai Matematikai Társulat Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement (2008) díja "for entirely reshaping representation theory, and in the process changing much of mathematics", és a 2014-es Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences "for his fundamental contributions to algebra, algebraic geometry, and representation theory, and for weaving these subjects together to solve old problems and reveal beautiful new connections".
