In a totally real number field K, a totally positive integer is called indecomposable if it cannot be written as the sum of two other such integers. While the indecomposable integers are important as the additive building blocks for totally positive integers in K, they are in general quite mysterious and not very well understood. In this talk, we explore the intricate relation between the indecomposables and universal forms. We also make use of the notion of sails from the geometry of numbers to study the indecomposables, and in turn derive new results on universal forms. Part of the talk is based on joint work with Vítězslav Kala.
