Description

Alfréd Rényi founded the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1950, which would later bear his name. We celebrate the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Institute with a one-day event at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, Hungary, on October 28, 2025.
Schedule - October 28, 2025
Morning session (in English)
Fields-érem, 2006
(University of Cambridge)
10:00-11:00 Wendelin Werner (University of Cambridge): Connections via random loops
The goal of the talk is to describe new (and possibly entertainingly surprising) results about collections of random independent loops in d-dimensional space. I will also try to explain why these clouds of loops are indeed very natural objects and why these connectivity questions via clusters of random loops are related to basic questions from physics.
Fields-érem, 2018
(ETH Zurich)
11:15-12:15 Alessio Figalli (ETH Zurich): Exploring Stability in Geometric and Functional Inequalities
Geometric and functional inequalities have long been foundational in analysis, shaping our understanding of numerous mathematical and physical phenomena. Recently, attention has turned to questions of stability: if a function is nearly optimal in a known inequality, can we quantify just how close it is to a genuine minimizer? In this talk, I will overview this beautiful topic and discuss some recent results.
